摘要
Syllabic compandors are devices in which gain variatons occur at a rate comparable to the syllabic rate of speech. A compandor consists of a combination of a compressor at one point in a communication path, for reducing the amplitude range of signals followed by an expander at another point for a complementary increase in the amplitude range. The compandor enhances the subjective speech performance primarily due to two actions. The compressor increase the average speech level of weaker signals prior to entering a communication path where increased noise is expected to be encountered. The expandor, in returning the speech signal to its original dynamic range provides a subjective enhancement to communication path by attenuating the noise perceived by the listening party during silences. For a further description of compandor operation see Annex A.
